CPU-specialized builds

Post by Mr.Mxyzptlk » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:32 am

To any server admins running Jaymod, I'd like to know if there's any serious interest to using CPU-specialized builds for
Jaymod server (NOT CLIENT! The client must be same for all). Was thinking of:

1. standard (what you see today, optimized but not cpu-specific)
2. AthlonXP (Improved AMD Athlon CPU with MMX, 3dNOW!, enhanced 3dNOW! and full SSE instruction set support)
3. Pentium4 (Intel Pentium4 CPU with MMX, SSE and SSE2 instruction set support)
4. Prescott (Improved version of Intel Pentium4 CPU with MMX, SSE, SSE2 and SSE3 instruction set support)

It's difficult to estimate or guage how much of an improvement this might lead to over a STANDARD optimized binary,
but with our new build system in place, it makes specialized builds like this possible for those admins who like to run
the best of the best on their servers :)

Also, I will be changing or enhancing the downloads page to make it easy to grab these binaries. They're not required, but if you don't mind a second smaller download, you might get a boost in performance.

The engine does not take advantage of dual processors.

No, but I could set one of the processors to be completely WolfET while the other one does other applications.

Absolutely, count me in, got dual xeons too, but have each server set on their own cpu.

Sempron was a Intel Celeron competitor. Just as Celeron is less than Pentium4, isn't Sempron < AhtlonXP ?

This was a missnomer for people when the AthlonXP name was discontinued and Sempron came out. Turned out it was exactly the same processor in the socketA series. Way back when, it was funny as hell to watch people come into the store looking for an XP processor willing to pay a premium and watch them walk out because all that was on the shelf was a sempron (just a repackaged XP) for cheaper.

Sempron is used as a product name for "Older Product" or "Celeron Equivalent cheap solution" now.

Yep, they wanted the athlon name exclusive to the x64 procs.
